The Nommos are long overdue
an African SF prize for Africans by Africans that honours our stories and how we choose to tell them

The Nommo Awards is the award organised by The African Speculative Fiction Society (ASFS) on behalf of its members to recognise works of speculative fiction by Africans.
We consider this to include science fiction, fantasy, stories of magic and traditional belief, alternative histories, horror and strange stuff that might not fit in anywhere else.

The ASFS was established over ten years ago as a voluntary and member-led initiative to celebrate and promote African speculative fiction. During this time, it has grown into a recognised and respected organisation, building international partnerships, curating events at world-class literary festivals, and administering the Nommo Awards. The name of the award is inspired by Dogon cosmology and the Nommos who take a variety of forms, including appearing on land as fish, walking on their tails. Our first award-giving ceremony was held at the Aké Arts and Book Festival in Lagos, Nigeria in 2017 and we returned there again to celebrate the landmark 10 year anniversary of the ASFS. In addition, the Nommo Awards have become a feature annually at Worldcon.

1000 USD prize

We have prize money with gratitude to our benefactor Tom Ilube CBE. A very special thank you to the British Science Fiction Association for their yearly grant towards our Nommo Award Ceremony and to the Worldcon for their technical and membership support.
